Best Memories Playing with the Middlesex Magic
I vividly remember the first day of tryouts with the Middlesex Magic, when I met Coach Crotty Sr. and a soon to be teammate, Hassan Fofana. I was immediately welcomed and enjoyed the atmosphere of family as well as competition. My best memories are traveling with the team. WOW. We had so much fun on and off the court. Traveling to Orlando to the Wide World of Sports and competing against some of the best basketball players in the country. Off the court, all of my teammates were such great guys and friends, and I still talk about some of the stories and how I it was as hard as I have laughed in my life. I was blessed to have an opportunity to be a part of this organization and share some of the best memories on and off the court with some GREAT people that really had a major positive influence in my life.

How the Middlesex Magic helped me the most
The Middlesex Magic gave me the opportunity to grow as a person more than anything. This is an incredible program because it is bigger than basketball. The program is about developing young men, putting them in positions to have success and giving them opportunities to change their lives for the better. This program really helped teach me how to be a leader on and off the court; I learned how to compete at the highest level, and I learned how to be a winner on and off the court. Coach Crotty also taught me how to inspire others by my actions, not just by my words. I gained confidence and learned that anything is possible through hard work and determination.
The Middlesex Magic program also taught me the value of hard work and how out work the next person to maximize your potential. The Magic was a great support system for me. I learned so much of what shaped me into the man I am today because I was surrounded by so many positive, influential people in the program. I cannot stress this enough and I will be forever grateful. I am sure I speak for many people when I say that Coach Crotty Sr. was like another father to me. He always knew how to challenge me, motivate me and bring the best out of me. Being a part of the Middlesex Magic organization will always be one of the greatest life shaping experiences of my life. I cannot thank the organization enough, especially Mike Crotty Sr and his entire family for what they have done for me. Thanks Coach. I love you. RIP.

How the Middlesex Magic helped me the most
I developed great confidence while playing for coach Crotty Sr. This is something I took with me throughout high school, college and now as a professional. I still carry the same confidence that I found when playing for Crotty Sr., and I have found that contagious to the players I coach.

I am currently the head coach at Vermont Academy. We have two Magic alums on our current roster and they’re exactly what you would expect from Middlesex Magic guys. It’s a big time luxury having them in our program and around our community here at the academy. Prior to VA, I coached at the college level at Holy Cross, Middlebury, Springfield College and NBA D League.

Best Memories of Playing with the Middlesex Magic
I have so many incredible memories of my time as both a Magic player and coach. When I was playing in the early days of the Magic organization it was pretty amazing what we accomplished. Our center was 6’2, so we weren’t the most intimidating team. Coach Crotty devised some pretty amazing plays and schemes that allowed us to take advantage of our suffocating full court press and aggressive offensive bombardment from three point land. Traveling to several national tournaments in Las Vegas, New York, Tennessee, North Carolina, etc, to be exposed to scouts and amazing competition really left a lasting impression. I think what separated the Magic from other AAU organizations was the character of the Crotty’s and the family environment they created. To this day I still keep in touch with a lot of the amazing core players on our team. As a coach, the highlight was taking an amazing group of talented and hardworking 8th graders to the national tournament. A tremendous group with fantastic parents. We had so much fun and continued the Magic Family way.
How the Middlesex Magic Helped you the most
I owe so much to my Magic experience. I think as a youth it was very enriching to be in an environment where you were surrounded by great caliber players and more importantly by intelligent and motivating coaches. This greatly improved my basketball skillset, knowledge of the game, and also overall confidence. Coach Crotty Sr., and now Coach Crotty Jr., always wanted the best for us both on and off the court. Obviously basketball was the forefront, but they actually took the time to care about other facets of your life like your future. Playing with the Magic helped me get in a foot in the door at my dream school Tufts University, and it was a pleasure playing alongside two fellow Magic alums for that team.

Best memories playing with the Middlesex Magic
My favorite memory from my time with the Magic was playing in the Long Island Shootout in 1996. I was a freshman in high school and the Magic program was in its infancy. Our trip to New York included a stay in Manhattan, a tour of the Statute of Liberty, and dinner at the Rainbow Room. This was my first out-of-state tournament and was a growing experience for both myself and my teammates.
How the Middlesex Magic helped you the most
The Middlesex Magic program helped me become a better person both on and off the court. Coach Crotty, Sr. preached the importance of playing hard and having fun while constantly stressing the importance of academics. He focused on the development of well-rounded, motivated individuals and encouraged us to pursue our goals. His influence is a major reason why I went on to play competitively in college.

Best memories playing with Middlesex Magic
My best memories of playing for Middlesex Magic involve our trips around the country to play in the top exposure events against the country’s top players. The Bob Gibbons tournament in North Carolina, and the Hoops TV Classic at the University of Maryland were two of these events that stick out. Our team had numerous successful college players, but more than the games was the life long relationships that were developed through the Middlesex Magic program. Some of my closest friends now 14-15 years later were members of those teams. As a college basketball coach, I can proudly say it was the perfect situation for young people to be a part of during their high school years. Coach Crotty Sr’s personality was truly personified in the Middlesex Magic program, and the relationships and personal confidence developed in each young man is still very evident today.
How the Middlesex Magic helped you the most
One thing that sticks out in my mind that Middlesex Magic helped me with the most was to develop my confidence at a very high level. This was not to say I lacked confidence prior, but Coach Crotty’s tough, demanding coaching style combined with his sincere love and care for his players took it to an even higher level. He let each player know how much he believed in them – that they could perform at an even higher level than they thought they could. I know for a fact this transcended to more players than myself, as he coached countless Magic teams that overachieved from preaching unselfishness, toughness, as well as developing individual and team confidence. These are traits that Coach Crotty Jr has continued to hold of the utmost importance as he carries on the legacy of the Magic program.

My own coaching style was provided an excellent foundation by Coach Crotty Sr through my experience as a young player in the Middlesex Magic program.

Best memories playing for the Middlesex Magic
Getting a chance to play basketball with a great group of guys and creating lasting friendships. Being inducted into the Middlesex Magic Hall of Fame – It was such an honor to be part of the first Middlesex Magic season and to be in the Hall of Fame for an AAU program that has grown to be one of the top programs in the state. My greatest memory from a game was into halftime against the Buddies in the state tournament. We controlled the entire game forced them to come out of their zone defense, which they refused to do. With about 10 seconds left, Mike Crotty Jr. drove to the hoop and dished it off for a layup as time expired. We went in to the locker room with momentum and ended up winning the game. How the Middlesex Magic helped me the most
I was never more confident in my abilities than when I was playing for the Magic. That is directly the result of Coach Crotty Sr.’s amazing ability to get the most out of each and every one of his players. With Mike Sr. as my coach, I was able to play some of the best basketball of my career while, at the same time, have the most fun. I enjoyed being a part of the Middlesex Magic teams as much as I have for any other team I’ve been on.

Best memories playing with Middlesex Magic
I will always remember the great people involved in the program. Mike Crotty Sr. always had the best intentions for his players and program. His passionate love of the game and the intense competitiveness was contagious. He only accepted good people and that was very clear across the entire program both with players and coaches. Lifelong friends were made from these days.
How the Middlesex Magic helped you the most
Middlesex Magic was the first very competitive basketball that I started to play in middle school, and playing for the Magic really fostered my love for the game. I do not think I would have been as successful in my career had I not started to play for the Magic program, and I am forever thankful that it helped my love for the game of basketball grow!

Best memories playing for the Middlesex Magic
Playing at Cameron Indoor stadium my junior year, all of the trips we were able to go on, teammates, and most importantly visiting the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington DC with Coach Crotty Sr. The Middlesex Magic prepared me for college and it instilled discipline, toughness, and competitiveness in me not only in basketball, but in everything I do. I learned the importance of being a member of a team, and it really opened me up to different cultures and people that I might not have had a chance to experience without it.
